US Ambassador Perdue Says Trump Offered Xi to Buy Weapons — The Hill
US Ambassador to China David Perdue said that President Donald Trump, during recent meetings in the United States, offered Chinese President Xi Jinping the opportunity to purchase American weapons. The Hill reports, citing the diplomat’s interview with Fox News.
Ambassador’s statement
According to Perdue, Trump emphasized that the United States sells weapons to other countries around the world. The ambassador added that at one point the US president asked Xi whether he would like to buy them.
The statement came amid strained relations between Washington and Beijing over the past decade. The United States and China are competing in the development of advanced artificial intelligence systems and also hold opposing views on the issue of Taiwan’s sovereignty. The publication also notes that Beijing has allied ties with US adversaries, including Iran.
