The Spanish Prime Minister stood by the Pope following Trump's attacks

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has publicly spoken out in defense of Pope Leo XIV in response to harsh remarks made by U.S. President Donald Trump.

This was reported in a post by the politician on social media platform X. Sánchez contrasted the American leader’s actions with the pontiff’s efforts, noting that while some provoke conflicts, the head of the Vatican consistently advocates for peace.

Quoting the proverb “He who sows the wind shall reap the whirlwind,” the Spanish prime minister emphasized the importance of the courage and bravery demonstrated by Pope Leo XIV in the current international context. He also confirmed that Spain would be honored to host the pontiff on a visit in a few weeks. This statement was part of a broader European reaction to Washington’s policies, particularly the naval blockade of Iran and pressure on religious institutions.

The public dispute between the leaders of the U.S. and Spain underscores growing diplomatic tensions within the Western bloc. While Trump accuses the Pope of being “soft” on crime and Tehran’s nuclear program, European capitals are increasingly siding with the Vatican, calling for de-escalation. Against the backdrop of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and escalating tensions in the Middle East, Spain is attempting to maintain its role as a mediator by supporting the pontiff’s humanitarian initiatives.

On the night of April 13, the American leader accused the pontiff of excessive politicization of his activities and weakness on key issues of global security.
