Former AFL player Nicky Winmar jailed for assaulting a woman
The Magistrates’ Court in Bendigo, Victoria, sentenced former Australian Football League player Nicky Winmar to six months in prison for assaulting a woman. After his release, the 60-year-old Winmar must also complete a 12-month community correction order.

As reported by ABC News Australia, Winmar’s lawyers immediately appealed the sentence handed down by the Bendigo Magistrates’ Court. The sentence concerns an assault that occurred last year in the town of Koonoomoo, north of Bendigo.

Details of the case
Last month, Winmar was found guilty on three counts of assault. According to ABC, he slammed a woman’s head against a door and pulled her hair. The victim, whose name has not been disclosed, said during a sentencing hearing earlier this month that the assault changed her and left her a shadow of the person she had been before.
After being found guilty, Winmar was removed from the Australian Football Hall of Fame. A bronze statue that stood near a stadium in Perth and depicted his response to racist abuse was also dismantled.
