The Danish Prime Minister believes that Trump has not abandoned his plans for Greenland

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stated that U.S. President Donald Trump’s desire to establish control over Greenland has not changed, making the current situation critically serious.

In comments to DR in Brussels on March 19, 2026, she emphasized that Denmark is currently trying to reach an agreement with the U.S. side, but negotiations must not cross the red lines set by Copenhagen. The head of government called these circumstances the most difficult challenge for the country’s foreign policy since World War II.

Frederiksen expressed hope for a positive outcome of the dialogue, while stressing the importance of support from European allies in resisting pressure from Washington. According to her, it is precisely close cooperation within Europe and investments in common security that allow Denmark to maintain a more stable position amid territorial claims. Currently, Copenhagen continues to defend the island’s sovereignty, despite the Trump administration’s persistence.

The situation surrounding Greenland has remained tense for quite some time, as the U.S. views the island as a strategic asset in the Arctic. Despite assurances of a strong partnership, Denmark is forced to strike a balance between maintaining relations with a key NATO ally and protecting its own territorial integrity. The issue of the island’s status remains a top priority on the Danish diplomatic agenda amid the geopolitical rivalry between the US and Russia in the polar region.

As Donald Trump’s statements regarding Greenland escalated, the Danish military considered a scenario involving the landing of American forces and prepared a limited countermeasure plan to defend the island. According to reports, the plan involved potentially disrupting a U.S. landing in the event of an attempted takeover.
