Egyptian President el-Sisi urges Iran to halt escalation in New Delhi
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, during a meeting with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in New Delhi, India, called on Tehran to stop the escalation in the region and attacks on Arab countries. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the BRICS summit.
Call for a settlement
As Asharq Al-Awsat reports, el-Sisi stressed Egypt's firm support for efforts to restore stability in the region. According to Egyptian presidential spokesperson Mohamed El-Shennawy, Cairo expects Iran to make every possible effort to stop the escalation and achieve a sustainable, comprehensive peaceful settlement of the crisis.
The Egyptian side stated that such a settlement must protect the sovereignty and assets of the region's states. El-Sisi also called for preserving the principles of good-neighborliness and strengthening the historical and cultural ties between the peoples of the region.

Cairo's position
Egypt has repeatedly declared its support for the security and stability of Arab countries, rejecting any violations that could harm their sovereignty. Cairo also called for an immediate halt to the escalation, emphasizing that serious dialogue and diplomacy are ways to resolve outstanding issues in the region.
During a telephone conversation with Pezeshkian in May, el-Sisi called on Iran to show flexibility and avoid miscalculations. He also expressed categorical rejection of attacks on the sovereignty of Gulf countries and threats to their territories.
Egypt and Iran severed diplomatic relations in 1979 and, 11 years later, restored diplomatic representation at the level of chargés d'affaires. Over the past three years, the ministers of both countries have held several meetings on the possible development of bilateral relations. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty also met on the sidelines of the BRICS summit.
