The President of Finland has declined to act as a mediator in negotiations with Russia

The President of Finland has declined to act as a mediator in negotiations with Russia

Finnish President Alexander Stubb stated that he does not see himself as Europe’s official representative in potential negotiations with Putin to end the war. In his view, the leading role in the future diplomatic process should be assumed by the largest European states, specifically France, Germany, and the United Kingdom (the so-called E3 group).

The head of state made this statement in an interview with the Finnish television channel MTV Uutiset, commenting on a proposal by Ukrainian parliamentarians.

Despite declining the role of chief mediator, Alexander Stubb noted that countries such as Finland or Norway are fully capable of effectively facilitating the negotiation process behind the scenes and providing the necessary logistical or advisory support. The Finnish leader also expressed his conviction that it is high time for European countries to initiate direct diplomatic contacts with the Kremlin. He emphasized that thanks to its resilience on the battlefield and financial assistance from allies, Ukraine is currently in a fairly strong military, political, and economic position, which allows it to engage with Russia exclusively from a position of strength.

The Finnish president’s statement came amid reports in European media about intensified efforts to develop a joint action plan between the “Euro-Troika” and Kyiv to involve Russia in discussions on a future peace settlement. According to Stubb, European leaders must show greater resolve and act in coordination with the U.S., as the current situation creates a necessary window of opportunity to begin exerting diplomatic pressure on Moscow with the aim of ending the full-scale conflict.

Earlier, Bulgarian President Rumen Radev stated that the European Union must take a leading role in negotiations with Russia to end the war against Ukraine.

The European Union is discussing the possible appointment of a special mediator for contacts with Russia, and Angela Merkel is among the leading candidates. Mario Draghi and Alexander Stubb are also being considered, but no final decision has been made yet due to disagreements among diplomats.

It should be noted that Merkel is being considered as a potential mediator in negotiations between the EU and Russia.

Berlin has called theRussian Federation’s proposal regarding Schröder’s mediation a fiction.
