Cyprus President Christodoulides aims to double Troodos population
Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides said that over the next decade he wants to double the population of the mountainous region of Troodos and Tylliria — from approximately 32,000 to 64,000 residents. In the coming days, the authorities are to present a new housing plan developed specifically for mountain communities.
As Cyprus Mail reports, Christodoulides said this during an award ceremony for graduates from mountain settlements held at the presidential residence. According to him, around 32,000 people live in 160 communities in the mountain areas and Tylliria. The president called these figures a reality that requires a direct response.
Housing plan for mountain areas
Christodoulides said that the new plan was prepared by the housing commissioner and the interior ministry after consultations with local residents. According to him, the goal of increasing the population will be pursued together with the leaders of local communities.

The president also noted that more than ten housing programmes have been announced since his government began its work. According to his data, more than €300 million has been allocated to them, while over 5,500 new housing units are currently under development.
Education and support for families
Christodoulides separately mentioned measures to preserve educational infrastructure in remote areas. In particular, the primary school in Kampos remained open, although for some time it had only one pupil. Small classes also operate in secondary schools, where as few as two pupils can study.
In addition, a three-year programme worth €3 million, funded by Helleniq Energy and EKO, provides financial assistance to more than 200 young families in Troodos and Tylliria. Free breakfasts will also be provided to 660 children attending public preschool institutions in these areas.
