President Trump says a possible US-Cuba deal could be reached — Asharq Al-Awsat

US President Donald Trump said at the White House in Washington that the United States and Cuba could reach an agreement and that, in his view, there would be no need for military action. He told reporters that he expects an arrangement between the United States and Cuba and does not believe military personnel would be needed for this.

Trump’s statements on Cuba

As Asharq Al-Awsat reports, the Trump administration has openly stated that its goal is to change Cuba’s government. The oil blockade imposed by the United States at the beginning of the year has, according to the outlet, created significant pressure on the country amid fuel shortages, power outages and infrastructure problems.

Before departing for Tennessee, Trump said that the United States wants to help Cuba and open it up to Americans. On Tuesday, during his address to the UN General Assembly, he called Cuba a failed state and said freedom would come to the island. The Cuban delegation left the hall during the speech.

Havana’s position

Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez later said at the UN that his country has always been open to dialogue with the United States, without directly mentioning Trump’s comments. He also said that Cuba is ready for commercial and business relations with American companies, while sharply condemning the US trade embargo.

The United States has maintained an embargo against Cuba for more than 60 years. According to the outlet, the Trump administration increased pressure on Havana after using military force in January to remove Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.
