Vietnamese president urges US to lift sanctions on Cuba — Anadolu Agency

Vietnamese President To Lam, speaking at the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York, United States, called on the United States to lift sanctions and the energy blockade on Cuba. He also voiced support for the Palestinians’ right to self-determination and a two-state settlement.

Position on Palestine and Cuba

As Anadolu Agency reports, To Lam stated that in all conflicts, civilians must be protected, international humanitarian law must be observed, and humanitarian access must be ensured.

According to him, Vietnam supports the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and a two-state solution. It envisages an independent Palestinian state peacefully coexisting with Israel in accordance with international law and relevant UN resolutions.

The Vietnamese president also called on Washington to end the unilateral embargo, sanctions and energy blockade on Cuba, as well as remove it from the list of state sponsors of terrorism. He called on the international community to help Cuba overcome the crisis, which he linked to the sanctions.

UN reform

To Lam stated the need to reform UN institutions while preserving and strengthening the fundamental principles of the organization’s Charter. Vietnam supports reforms of the General Assembly, Security Council and Secretariat to improve the UN’s effectiveness and advance the interests of developing countries.

Among the priorities, he named restoring trust among states based on the UN Charter and international law, fair, inclusive and sustainable development, shaping technology governance so that progress serves humanity, and strengthening multilateralism and the role of the UN. According to him, states must respect each other’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity, refrain from interfering in internal affairs, and abstain from the threat or use of force contrary to the UN Charter.
