Mexican President Sheinbaum responds to Trump’s statements about cartels — Mexico News Daily

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum responded at a morning press conference to statements by U.S. President Donald Trump about cartel violence in the country. As Mexico News Daily reports, she also announced her first trip to Asia as president — in November, Sheinbaum will attend the APEC summit in Shenzhen, China.

Response to Trump’s remarks

During his address to the UN General Assembly, Trump called Mexico the “epicenter” of cartel violence and said it was unacceptable for the United States to share a border with a country that, in his words, is controlled by “hostile cartels.” At the same time, he said his administration has a very good relationship with the Mexican government.

Sheinbaum said she could likewise say that it is difficult to live next to a country with a high level of illegal drug use and significant weapons production. She added that she would not make such statements because Mexico has good relations with Trump and the U.S. government. According to her, the two countries coordinate their work in the field of security and are making progress.

Summit in China and railway projects

The president said she would take part in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation leaders’ meeting in Shenzhen on November 18–19. Mexico will host the APEC summit in 2028, while the 2027 event will take place in Vietnam.

Sheinbaum also said that during her six-year presidential term from 2024 to 2030, Mexico will invest about 750 billion pesos, or $42.95 billion, in railway projects. According to her, about 60,000 people are currently working directly on railway construction. The projects discussed at the press conference included connections from Mexico City to Querétaro, from Mexico City to Pachuca, and a line from Saltillo to Nuevo Laredo.
