Ghanaian teacher unions demand apology from Minister Muntaka
In Ghana, three teacher unions have called on Interior Minister Mubarak Mohammed Muntaka to retract his remarks and apologize to educators. The dispute arose over comments that, according to the unions, concerned forged or altered WASSCE examination results among security service recruits.
As MyJoyOnline reports, the demand was made by the Ghana National Association of Teachers, the National Association of Graduate Teachers, and the Pre-Tertiary Education Teachers Association of Ghana. They described the remarks attributed to the minister as offensive, erroneous, and demeaning to education workers and the Ghana Education Service.
Unions’ position
According to the associations, Muntaka spoke on September 9, 2026, at the opening ceremony of educational facilities at the Roman Catholic School in Asokore-Mampong, in the Ashanti Region. The unions said the minister stated that the problem of fake or altered WASSCE results should arise within the Ghana Education Service and the teaching profession, rather than in the security services.

In a joint statement dated September 10, 2026, signed by Ghana National Association of Teachers General Secretary Thomas T. Musah, National Association of Graduate Teachers President Jacob Anaba, and PRETAG President King Ali Awudu, the organizations stressed that they are open to constructive criticism. At the same time, they said they would not accept attempts to ridicule or discredit the teaching profession.
Document verification
The unions noted that to be employed by the Ghana Education Service, candidates must obtain the relevant education, complete national service, and receive a valid teaching licence from the National Teaching Council. According to them, applicants also submit educational documents, a national service certificate, a licence, and a Ghana Card, which are verified and audited by the institutions that issued them.
The teacher organizations rejected linking the falsification of WASSCE certificates to educators and the Ghana Education Service. They also said that officials should not make teachers “scapegoats” in matters of staff recruitment and verification of educational documents.
