Irish regulator launches investigation into X over child access
Ireland’s media regulator, Coimisiún na Meán, has launched a formal investigation into the social network X. The review concerns the platform’s compliance with requirements for age-verification mechanisms and parental controls, Channel NewsAsia reports, citing Reuters.
Age verification
Ireland’s Online Safety Code provides for age-verification mechanisms to prevent children from viewing videos containing pornography, as well as material featuring extreme or excessively violent and unjustified violence or acts of cruelty.
Coimisiún na Meán said it was concerned that X may have implemented such mechanisms ineffectively. The regulator stressed that age verification based solely on a user’s self-declaration is not considered effective.

Parental controls
The regulator also expressed concerns about the parental controls introduced by X. According to Coimisiún na Meán’s assessment, these tools may be ineffective, fail to meet minimum requirements, or be difficult to find.
Under Ireland’s Online Safety Code, Coimisiún na Meán has the authority to impose a fine of up to 10% of the relevant annual turnover.
