In Mexico, 42% of students did not reach the basic PISA level
In Mexico, 41.8% of 15-year-old students did not reach the basic level of knowledge in science, mathematics and reading, according to the results of the latest PISA assessment. This is more than twice the average for Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development countries, which stands at 19.7%.
As Mexico News Daily reports, 7,843 students from 297 schools across the country took part in the testing. The OECD periodically conducts the PISA Programme for International Student Assessment.
Results below the OECD average
Mexican students scored an average of 388 points in mathematics, 408 in reading and 414 in science. The OECD averages were 463, 461 and 482 points, respectively.
Compared with the 2022 PISA assessment, Mexico's result fell by seven points in both mathematics and reading, while its science score remained unchanged. The current results are the country's worst since 2009.

Students' attitudes toward learning
More than 80% of Mexican test participants said they were interested in various topics. According to the OECD, this figure is 7% higher than the global average. At the same time, only 11% of respondents agreed with the statement that school is a waste of time, while the OECD average was 24%.
OECD Director for Education and Skills Andreas Schleicher said in an interview with El Financiero that a sharp deterioration in results has been recorded worldwide, especially in reading. Education International, the world's largest federation of teachers, linked the decline in achievement to shorter attention spans, excessive use of artificial intelligence and a global teacher shortage.
According to the publication, China, Singapore, South Korea, Estonia and Canada achieved the highest results across all PISA areas.
