Record-breaking downpours have flooded Japan; one person has died
Record-breaking torrential rains pounded eastern Japan, causing widespread flooding, landslides, and bringing the transportation system to a standstill.
The most severe natural disaster warning was issued in 14 municipalities in Chiba Prefecture, located near Tokyo, where rainfall exceeded 100 millimeters per hour. Nearly 220,000 local residents were advised to evacuate immediately to safer areas.
One person was found dead in the city of Itikawa, and in neighboring Kashiwa, emergency responders rescued two people who were trapped in a flooded car. The water flooded streets and train stations, causing partial suspensions of train service, and leaving tens of thousands of homes without power. The severe weather struck the region immediately after a tropical storm that had previously injured at least seven people and caused widespread power outages.
