Iowa Republicans back resolution to limit Trump’s war powers regarding Iran
In the United States, two Republican members of the House of Representatives from competitive districts in Iowa — Zach Nunn and Mariannette Miller-Meeks — supported a resolution on President Donald Trump’s war powers. The document is intended to limit the president’s ability to continue military action against Iran without congressional approval. Earlier, both lawmakers had voted against the resolution.
Seven Republicans supported the document
As PBS NewsHour reports, citing the Associated Press, on Tuesday Nunn and Miller-Meeks joined Democrats and five other Republicans who voted for the resolution. It was the third vote by House members on ending the war with Iran. The result was close to the outcomes of previous attempts, although this time more Republicans joined all Democrats.
In addition to Nunn and Miller-Meeks, the resolution was supported by Republicans Nancy Mace of South Carolina, Tom Barrett of Michigan, Warren Davidson of Ohio, Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania, and Thomas Massie of Kentucky. Iowa Representative Ashley Hinson, who is running for Senator Joni Ernst’s seat, voted against it.

Statements by congressmembers and public sentiment
Nunn, a U.S. Air Force veteran, said on social media that after the possibility of negotiations had been closed off, prolonged combat operations require congressional authorization. He added that he would not support another war without defined time limits.
Miller-Meeks, a U.S. Army veteran, said that the president must present Congress and the public with a plan to end the war. According to her, this would make it possible to focus on bringing U.S. military personnel home and lowering prices. She also said that Americans do not want another prolonged war.
According to the report, 18 U.S. service members have been killed in the war with Iran. Two of them were from Iowa, while another had previously lived in the state. A July AP-NORC poll showed that about three in ten adult Americans approved of Trump’s actions regarding Iran. According to a September New York Times/Siena poll, about six in ten likely voters considered Trump’s decision to start the war with Iran wrong.
