The U.S. imposed visa restrictions in response to accusations that South Africa discriminates against Afrikaners
The United States has imposed visa restrictions on individuals whom Washington accuses of facilitating racial discrimination, violence, and land confiscation without compensation in South Africa. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the new measures. According to him, the South African government “has not taken sufficient measures” in response to Washington’s concerns.
“The South African government has not adequately addressed the issues we have previously raised,” Rubio said.
He explained that the restrictions will apply to individuals whom the U.S. believes “contribute to racial discrimination, incite violence, or create conditions for land confiscation without compensation.” The names of individuals who may already be affected by the new rules were not disclosed.
South Africa reacted critically to the decision. Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Ronald Lamola stated that he viewed the announcement with “concern.”
“This announcement once again reflects a misinterpretation of South Africa’s domestic policy by fringe groups that wrongfully present themselves as representatives of ‘minorities’ and Afrikaners in general,” reads an official statement from the South African Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Officials in Pretoria emphasized that the land policy is aimed at addressing the consequences of racial inequality that took root during the apartheid era.
“It is our sovereign right to enact laws that address the problems caused by centuries of racial injustice,” the South African government stated.
It is worth noting that tensions between the countries have escalated since Donald Trump’s return to the White House. His administration accuses the South African government of discriminating against Afrikaners and criticizes legislation that allows for the expropriation of property without compensation in certain cases.
South African authorities reject these accusations and insist that the law does not allow for the arbitrary seizure of land, and that decisions can be challenged in court. The U.S. Embassy in Pretoria stated that the new visa restrictions may be only the first step in further measures by Washington.
