A Republican who called for the death penalty for pedophiles has been accused of child abuse
Former Republican state representative Michael Caruso was arrested in Florida and faces five serious charges related to child sexual abuse.

Caruso had previously supported the death penalty for adults convicted of sexually abusing children under the age of 12. He is currently charged with five serious crimes: kidnapping, child molestation, indecent exposure, luring or enticing a child, and child abuse resulting in psychological trauma.
Investigators in Florida allege that Caruso sexually abused a child who is a relative of his. The abuse occurred repeatedly from the fall of 2024 through August 2025, including during a family cruise, fishing trips, and Thanksgiving celebrations. According to a police statement, the child has been receiving psychological counseling since April 2026.
It should be noted that while representing Florida’s 87th District in the Florida House of Representatives, Caruso supported a bill now known as the “Florida Aggravated Sexual Abuse Act of 2023”. This law allows prosecutors to seek the death penalty for adults convicted of sexually assaulting a child under the age of 12.
In a House of Representatives vote on April 13, 2023, Caruso voted “yes.” The bill was signed into law in May 2023 and took effect six months later.
