Russia has officially notified Finland of the closure of railway border crossings

Finland has received an official document from the Russian side regarding the temporary suspension of traffic through several railway border crossings. The restrictions apply to the Vartius–Lyttä, Niirala–Värtsilä, and Imatra–Svetogorsk crossings, as well as the Vyborg and St. Petersburg stations.

Finnish government officials note that they learned of this Russian decision from the media back in late June, but have only now received formal notification.

According to the Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, these actions by the Russian Federation will not have a significant impact on the Finnish economy or logistics. Key rail freight traffic between the countries passes through the Vainikkala border crossing, which continues to operate without changes or restrictions.

This was reported by Yle.

As a reminder, the Russian government decided to suspend traffic through a number of railway border crossing points on the borders with Finland, Estonia, and Latvia starting July 1.

The Finnish Border Guard has permanently closed the temporary border crossing points “Inari” and “Parikkala” in the Liekka region and is now removing the signs.
