Russia is expanding its military presence in Africa at six air bases

Russia is rapidly expanding its military presence in Libya, stepping up its activities at six key air bases

These are facilities that could become important hubs for expanding Russian influence in North Africa and the Sahel.

Russian activity has been observed at the following air bases:

  • Jufra;
  • Al-Hadim;
  • Gardabia;
  • Barak al-Shat;
  • Maaten el-Sarra;
  • Tamanhint.

They are located in central, eastern, and southern Libya.

According to U.S. intelligence, modern military equipment is appearing at these sites, including MiG-29 fighter jets, drones, and air defense systems.

In addition to deploying equipment, Russian forces are carrying out large-scale construction and infrastructure work.

At the air bases, runways, warehouses, and aircraft hangars are being restored. In particular, over the past year, three new hangars and, presumably, living quarters were built at the Al-Khadim base. In 2026, a communications tower and barracks were also erected there.

At the same time, the number of Russian personnel is growing. For example, at the Brak el-Shat airbase, their numbers increased from approximately 300 to 450 within a few months.

Analysts believe that Moscow may use Libya’s strategic location to expand its military and logistical network in Africa.

In particular, Russian bases could facilitate the movement of weapons, military equipment, and personnel to other countries in the region.

The African Defense Forum notes that one of the key bases potentially allows Russia to “quietly transport weapons into Sudan or Chad.”

Thus, the expansion of Russian military infrastructure in Libya may indicate Moscow’s long-term plans to strengthen its influence not only within the country itself but also in the broader region of North Africa and the Sahel.

Africa Business Insider reports this, citing data from the U.S. National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency.

Earlier, the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense stated that Russia continues to expand its influence in Africa through the Africa Politology network, which is linked to the legacy of the Wagner Group. According to the Main Intelligence Directorate, this organization engages in information operations, supports pro-Russian politicians, and builds a media network to promote the Kremlin’s interests.
