The Pentagon's decision regarding troops in Poland came as a surprise to the U.S.

The Pentagon's decision regarding troops in Poland came as a surprise to the U.S.

U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hagset’s decision to cancel the deployment of approximately 4,000 U.S. troops to Poland came as a surprise to some Pentagon officials. Officials at the U.S. Department of Defense say they do not understand the reasoning behind this move.

Against this backdrop, Europe and the U.S. are trying to determine whether this is a one-off decision or part of a broader shift in military policy. This is reported in a Politico article.

The Pentagon did not expect the decision to cancel the deployment of U.S. troops to Poland, and within the U.S. Department of Defense, it has sparked surprise and unanswered questions.

Politico reports this, citing three U.S. defense officials familiar with the situation. According to them, it is currently unclear why Defense Secretary Pete Hagset made this decision. “We had no idea this was going to happen,” said one U.S. official, adding that active telephone consultations have been ongoing in recent hours between U.S. and European partners trying to understand the logic behind the order.

This involves about 4,000 troops from Texas who were already preparing for a scheduled nine-month rotation in Poland. According to sources, some of the equipment and personnel have already begun moving toward Europe, which further surprised those involved in the process.

At the same time, U.S. troops stationed in Europe remain one of the key elements of the system of deterrence against Russia, and any changes in their deployment are traditionally perceived by allies as a signal of Washington’s political course. The article also notes that U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly stated the need for European countries to take greater responsibility for their own security, while calling Poland an “exemplary ally” due to its high defense spending.

According to the publication’s sources, the decision to cancel the troop deployment has only intensified discussions regarding the future role of the U.S. in European security. The White House declined to comment, redirecting journalists’ inquiries to the Pentagon.

The United States has canceled the deployment of more than 4,000 American troops to Poland. This involves the redeployment of the 2nd Armored Combat Team of the 1st Cavalry Division and associated military equipment.

As a reminder, the first F-35 fighter jets manufactured by the U.S. for Poland are scheduled to arrive in late May. This will mark a key milestone in the introduction of fifth-generation fighter jets into the Polish military, which has been preparing the infrastructure and training pilots for their use for several years.
