Ro Khanna urges US and China to agree on AI safety rules — South China Morning Post
In the United States, Congressman Ro Khanna called on Washington and Beijing to agree on international safety rules for artificial intelligence ahead of a planned meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Washington. According to the South China Morning Post, Khanna proposed an approach similar to safeguards in the nuclear sphere.
Control proposals
Khanna said the leaders of the two countries should agree on safety standards, a ban on recursively self-improving AI, as well as certification and inspection standards. In his view, such mechanisms are needed to prevent the loss of control over AI models or their misuse.
At an event in New York attended by Asia Society President Kevin Rudd, the congressman proposed an international inspection regime to oversee advanced laboratories in the United States and China. Among Chinese companies, he mentioned Alibaba, Moonshot and DeepSeek. Khanna believes the presidents should support the need for regulation in an international format and set a three-month deadline for developing a basic understanding.

AI on the summit agenda

Khanna said that winning an AI war, like winning a nuclear war, would be catastrophic for civilization. He also called for a preventive pause on self-recursive systems while they are still under development. Kevin Rudd called the United States and China the two AI superpowers.
China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Xi Jinping will visit the United States on a state visit on September 23–25. Artificial intelligence is expected to be one of the topics of talks with Donald Trump.
