Russia threatens Hungary with response over expulsion of 10 diplomats
Russia, an aggressor state, has threatened Hungary with a harsh and painful response after Budapest decided to expel 10 Russian diplomats. This was reported by Anadolu Agency, citing the Russian Foreign Ministry.
Statement by the Russian Foreign Ministry
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told the state-run TASS news agency that the response to actions she described as a “Russophobic lobby in Budapest” would be harsh and painful.
Budapest’s position
On Monday, Hungarian Foreign Minister Anita Orban said that the country had expelled diplomats over activities it considered incompatible with their diplomatic status. According to her, the decision was made to protect Hungary’s security and sovereignty.

Orban also stressed that the expulsion of the diplomats does not mean a severance of diplomatic relations with Moscow. Budapest intends to maintain dialogue with Russia.
Previous steps
In May, Hungary expelled one Russian diplomat over alleged intelligence-gathering activities. That same month, Orban summoned Russian Ambassador Yevgeny Stanislavov after Russian drone strikes on Ukraine’s western Zakarpattia region, where a significant ethnic Hungarian community lives.
