Rubio to visit Colombia, Ecuador and Peru on September 8–10

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will visit Colombia, Ecuador and Peru on September 8–10. He will meet with Colombia’s new government led by President Abelardo De La Espriella, Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa, and Peru’s new government headed by President Keiko Fujimori.

Security, earthquake and trade

As reported by Anadolu Agency, the talks will cover US support for Colombia’s response to the earthquake’s aftermath, stronger cooperation in combating narco-terrorism, and the benefits of deepening the three countries’ trade ties with the United States.

The US State Department said the trip is intended to reaffirm President Donald Trump’s administration’s commitment to a “safe, prosperous, and democratic Western Hemisphere.” Washington seeks to expand cooperation with Latin American governments in security and trade, paying greater attention to countering drug trafficking and organized crime.

Cooperation with Colombia and Ecuador

Colombia recently joined the Americas Counter Cartel Coalition A3C, an alliance supported by the Trump administration to combat drug trafficking and organized crime in the region. US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth said that De La Espriella had authorized joint US-Colombian counterdrug operations on Colombian territory.

Rubio is also expected to discuss security cooperation with Noboa. Over the past year, Washington and Quito have conducted joint counterdrug operations in Ecuador.
