Sanders urges Trump and Xi to agree on a pause in AI development
In the United States, Senator Bernie Sanders called on President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping to hold talks at their upcoming summit on an agreement to pause the development of artificial intelligence and ban superintelligence. NDTV World reports.
Sanders called the position of Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, OpenAI chief Sam Altman, and xAI head Elon Musk on the need to slow AI development a start, but an insufficient step. In a post on X, the senator compared the technology's development to heading toward a cliff, where merely reducing speed is not enough.
Proposal to ban superintelligence
The senator again advocated for a pause in the development of advanced artificial intelligence systems, saying that the future of humanity is at stake. He warned of the danger of AI emerging that would be smarter than any human and able to act independently outside human control.

Earlier this month, Sanders introduced a legislative initiative for a permanent ban on superintelligent AI. Its full text has not yet been published. According to the outlet, the bill is intended to prevent the creation of systems capable of functioning independently of human control.
Position of technology companies
In his blog, Dario Amodei warned of the risks of losing control over AI systems, their use for cyberattacks and bioterrorism, as well as serious economic disruptions. He noted that commercial competition could intensify these threats and called for slowing the pace of expanding model capabilities.
Amodei said that Anthropic will provide independent evaluators with ongoing access to its systems at the same level as company employees. Sam Altman said that OpenAI had discussed the pace of AI development in recent weeks and promised to introduce a similar approach to independent evaluation.
