Sandu called for increased pressure on Russia following the crash of a drone

Sandu called for increased pressure on Russia following the crash of a drone

Moldovan President Maia Sandu reported a new violation of the country’s airspace by a Russian drone. According to her, the drone crashed on Moldovan territory following yet another Russian attack on Ukraine. Sandu called on international partners to increase pressure on Russia to ensure that such incidents do not happen again.

Moldovan President Maia Sandu stated that her country strongly condemns the latest Russian attacks on Ukraine. According to her, during a nighttime attack, a Russian drone once again violated Moldovan airspace. It subsequently crashed within the country’s territory. “Our airspace was violated once again, and the drone crashed on Moldovan territory. Much greater pressure must be exerted on Russia to put an end to this,” Sandu wrote.

The president did not describe the situation as an accidental incident. She linked the drone’s crash to Russian strikes on Ukraine and emphasized that such incidents pose a threat to Moldova. Sandu also called on the country’s partners to respond more firmly to such violations. According to her, Russia must face greater international pressure to cease actions that cause the war and its consequences to extend beyond Ukraine’s borders.

Drone Debris Found in Moldova

After the drone crashed on Moldovan territory, relevant services and experts arrived at the scene. According to preliminary findings, the debris found belongs to a “Geran”-type drone. This is the name used in Russia for attack drones deployed in strikes against Ukraine.

Russian forces regularly use such drones to strike Ukrainian cities and infrastructure. Due to their significant flight range, they can end up near the borders of neighboring countries. That is precisely why every instance of a drone entering Moldovan airspace causes concern among the country’s authorities. At the same time, final conclusions regarding the circumstances of the drone’s crash must be drawn by experts after the necessary investigations are completed.

This is not the first time Moldova has faced such incidents

Violations of Moldova’s airspace by Russian drones have occurred before. Such incidents were particularly frequent during large-scale Russian attacks on Ukraine. This is a serious problem for Chisinau, as Moldova shares a direct border with Ukraine. When Russian missiles and drones fly toward Ukrainian targets near the Moldovan border, there is a risk that they could enter Moldovan airspace.

In some cases, Moldovan authorities have reported temporary closures of airspace or security operations in response to detected objects. Similar incidents have also been recorded in neighboring Romania. Russian drones have repeatedly come close to the airspace of NATO countries, forcing the allies to step up surveillance and respond to threats. For Moldova, the situation is particularly sensitive because the country is not a member of NATO and has limited capabilities to independently counter such threats.

Sandu Calls for Increased Pressure on Russia

Following the latest incident, the Moldovan president emphasized not only the border violation itself but also the need for an international response. Sandu believes that Russia must face greater pressure due to its continued attacks on Ukraine. This primarily refers to diplomatic and economic measures that Ukraine’s partners can take against Moscow. “Much greater pressure must be exerted on Russia to put an end to this,” the Moldovan president emphasized.

According to her, the problem extends beyond the Ukrainian-Russian war. When Russian drones cross the borders of neighboring states, even countries not directly involved in the war feel the consequences of the hostilities. That is precisely why Chisinau insists on the need for an international response.

Why This Is Important for Moldova

Moldova is trying to avoid being drawn into the war raging in neighboring Ukraine. At the same time, the country’s geographic location makes it vulnerable to the consequences of Russian attacks. A drone that has strayed off course or deliberately changed direction can cross the border in a matter of minutes. In such a situation, Moldovan authorities must quickly determine what exactly is in the air and whether the object poses a threat.

Attack drones are a particular cause for concern. Even if a drone does not intend to attack Moldova, its crash on the country’s territory could result in damage or casualties. In addition, such incidents place an additional burden on Moldovan security forces and force the country to tighten control over its airspace.

What is known so far

It is currently known that debris from a drone has been found on Moldovan territory; according to preliminary expert conclusions, the drone is of the “Geran” type. Maia Sandu condemned the Russian attacks on Ukraine and reported a new violation of Moldovan airspace. The president called for increased international pressure on Russia to put an end to such incidents.

The incident served as yet another reminder that neighboring countries are increasingly feeling the consequences of Russia’s war against Ukraine. For Moldova, the issue of protecting its own airspace remains particularly important amid regular Russian attacks on Ukraine. This is stated in Maia Sandu’s post on social media platform X.

On the night of August 19–20, a drone—preliminarily identified as a Russian “Shahed”—violated Moldova’s airspace. The drone remained over the country’s territory for about six minutes before returning in the direction of Ukraine.
