During his trip to China, U.S. President Donald Trump visited one of the country’s most restricted government compounds—Zhongnanhai in Beijing. It is home to the offices of the Chinese Communist Party leadership and the State Council, and part of the grounds was once an imperial garden.
Xi Jinping personally gave the American president a tour. The leaders strolled along the paths of the ancient garden and examined the trees, which, according to the Chinese leader, could be between 200 and 400 years old. During the conversation, Trump was visibly surprised that trees could live so long. Xi replied that there are even thousand-year-old trees in China. Part of this conversation was picked up by the microphones of journalists accompanying the delegations.
During the walk, Trump also asked how often Zhongnanhai hosts foreign leaders. Xi Jinping replied that this happens very rarely. “At first, we usually didn’t hold diplomatic events here. Even after we started holding them, it’s still extremely rare,” said the Chinese leader.
He then mentioned that among the few world leaders who had visited this place was Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. “For example, Putin was here,” Xi Jinping noted during his conversation with Trump.
At the end of the tour, the Chinese leader invited the American president to touch a tree that is about 280 years old. Trump replied briefly: “Okay. I like it.”
According to Sky News, this walk was one of the most informal parts of Trump’s visit to China. Despite diplomatic tensions between Washington and Beijing, efforts were made to conduct the meeting in as calm and friendly an atmosphere as possible.
