Deuba allies join Thapa camp in Nepal — Kathmandu Post
In Nepal, around 40 officials and members of the former central working committee of the Nepali Congress who had remained in the faction of former party president Sher Bahadur Deuba have joined the camp of the current party leader, Gagan Thapa. The politicians arrived at the party’s central office in Sanepa to take part in preparations for the general convention, Kathmandu Post reports.
Dialogue instead of a split
Purna Bahadur Khadka, who had previously served as acting party president, played an important role in the transition of Deuba’s allies. He refused to lead a possible split in the Nepali Congress and began negotiations with Thapa. After that, a significant number of politicians, including figures close to Deuba, supported Khadka.
At a party meeting on October 14 last year, Deuba announced a break from active politics and transferred the powers of acting president to Khadka. At the same time, according to the publication, Khadka did not have the full trust of Deuba’s closest circle. There were also suspicions within the party that he was close to Thapa and Bishwo Prakash Sharma.

Agreement on participation in the convention
On April 17, the Supreme Court recognized the special general convention and Thapa’s election as party president as legitimate. After that, representatives of Deuba’s faction raised the issue of including in the central working committee 111 officials and members of the body’s former composition who had not joined it after the special convention.
Thapa said he was ready to consider proposals from Khadka and another party leader, Shekhar Koirala. Later, the sides agreed to allow members who had reinstated but not renewed their active membership to attend the convention, include representatives of Deuba’s former leadership in the central working committee, and involve all factions in committees and structures related to holding the convention.
Thapa also said that he wants to invite Deuba as the chief guest to the convention’s opening ceremony and will continue efforts to involve him in the event.
