The Speaker of the Slovenian Parliament is calling for a referendum on withdrawal from NATO
The newly elected Speaker of the Slovenian National Assembly, Zoran Stevanović, has announced his intention to organize a referendum on the country’s withdrawal from NATO.
He announced this in an interview with Radio and Television Slovenia (RTV).
According to the politician, his party, “Pravda,” advocates for a more independent foreign policy for the country.
“We believe that Slovenia should pursue an independent, sovereign policy. That we should cooperate with all countries, primarily with major powers, but this cooperation must under no circumstances mean subordination,” Stevanović stated.
He also emphasized that he opposes the country’s involvement in foreign conflicts.
“We are categorically opposed to interference in foreign military and diplomatic disputes, as Slovenia never benefits from this,” he added.
In addition, the speaker announced his intention to visit Moscow in the near future.
“I would like to build bridges to work well with all countries, regardless of the wall erected between the West and the East. That is why I plan to visit Moscow soon,” Stevanović noted.
The “Truth” party, which he leads, received 5.5% of the vote and five seats in parliament following the latest elections. On April 10, lawmakers elected him speaker of the Slovenian National Assembly.
Earlier, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan stated that NATO countries could use the July summit in Ankara to restore relations with U.S. President Donald Trump.
Peter Magyar, leader of the opposition party “Tisa,” officially called on President Tamás Szujok to resign during a rally attended by thousands in Budapest.
