The U.S. denied a visa to a Russian diplomat to attend a UN Security Council meeting

The United States denied a visa to Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Alimov, who was scheduled to attend a UN Security Council meeting in New York. In response, Russia accused Washington of violating the United Nations Headquarters Agreement.

Reuters reports this.

In addition, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Arakchi reportedly did not receive a visa.

The main topic of the meeting was compliance with the UN Charter and the strengthening of multilateral cooperation.

Russia’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Vasily Nebenzya, stated that Alexander Alimov had been invited by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, as the Russian diplomat is responsible for issues related to UN activities.

According to Nebenzia, the refusal to issue a visa is a “flagrant case of disrespect” toward China’s presidency of the UN Security Council.

During the meeting, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasized the need to “update” the UN Charter amid growing global instability and international conflicts.

“The giant ship of global civilization is sailing into dangerous waters,” Wang Yi said.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiga called for an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council following a massive Russian attack that killed Ukrainian civilians.

Russia cynically called the massive attack on Ukraine a retaliatory strike.
