The Lithuanian Prime Minister said her family was also affected by a major data breach — LRT
Lithuanian Prime Minister Inga Ruginienė has officially stated that her own family was among the hundreds of thousands of citizens whose confidential information was compromised as a result of a massive data breach involving the country’s government registries.
The incident came to light following special audits that confirmed unauthorized access to the personal data of high-ranking officials, LRT reports.
The cyberattack has caused serious concern among Lithuanian government leaders and law enforcement agencies.
The head of government publicly expressed solidarity with her affected compatriots and emphasized that she understands the scale of this problem from personal experience.
Ruginienė stated that she “fully understands” the emotions of citizens affected by the data leak from the Registry Center, as investigations revealed that her own family was also affected.
A detailed investigation is currently underway to determine the exact circumstances of the incident.
The large-scale cyber incident came to light last week when security experts detected suspicious activity on the network. It is believed that more than 600,000 records may have been illegally copied from the registries.
According to preliminary findings of the investigation, the attackers’ primary targets were real estate and legal entity registries.
Access to the system was likely gained from abroad by exploiting vulnerabilities in the information systems of other institutions or individual user accounts.
Due to the emergency situation, the head of government initiated emergency meetings with the heads of the country’s key security and economic agencies.
On Wednesday morning, the prime minister discussed the situation with the ministers of economy and innovation, interior, and national defense. Officials are developing a set of urgent measures to address existing vulnerabilities.
“We all understand that the situation is very serious,” she said.
