Vance urged Zelenskyy not to attack tankers in the Black Sea — FT
On July 31, U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance called Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to ask him to halt attacks on oil tankers in the Black Sea, according to the Financial Times.
Zelenskyy ordered a “freeze” on the intensive campaign of strikes against oil tankers specifically following Vance’s appeal.
The White House was reportedly unhappy that Ukraine was further destabilizing oil markets and harming American companies. As is known, the Ukrainian Armed Forces also targeted tankers transporting oil from Kazakhstan to the Caspian Pipeline Consortium terminal in the Russian port of Novorossiysk.
After Vens’s call to Zelenskyy on July 31, the Ukrainian Armed Forces have not struck any vessels near the CPC terminal since.
According to insiders, the Ukrainian president promised to halt attacks on CPC infrastructure or non-Russian vessels, provided they are not subject to Ukrainian sanctions and are not transporting Russian oil or other Russian cargo.
“We are listening to our American partners,” a high-ranking Ukrainian official told the media.
He also added that Kyiv had established appropriate “mechanisms” in response to the U.S. request.
Furthermore, it is known that the CPC was one of the main topics of discussion between Ukraine and the governments of the U.S. and Kazakhstan.
