The U.S. will allow Iranian representatives to attend the UN General Assembly

The Iranian delegation will receive U.S. permission to attend the UN General Assembly session in New York next week. At the same time, Iranian representatives will be subject to travel restrictions and a ban on purchasing certain goods. A U.S. State Department spokesperson announced this on September 17, according to Reuters.

Iranian representatives will be able to travel to New York to participate in the UN General Assembly session. A U.S. State Department spokesperson announced this on Thursday, September 17. According to the spokesperson, the U.S. will grant the Iranian delegation permission to participate in General Assembly events next week. However, this does not mean that Iranian representatives will be able to move freely within the United States.

What restrictions will apply?

According to the State Department spokesperson, members of the Iranian delegation will be subject to travel restrictions. These are the same rules that apply to Iranian diplomatic representatives in the U.S. They restrict the areas where delegation members may travel and impose specific conditions on their stay in the country.

Iranian representatives will also be prohibited from purchasing luxury items and certain other goods in accordance with U.S. policy. Thus, permission to participate in the General Assembly does not lift other restrictions that the U.S. imposes on Iranian representatives.

The delegation will be smaller

A State Department spokesperson also noted that this year’s Iranian delegation will be smaller than last year’s. “This year’s delegation is smaller than last year’s,” he said. The U.S. State Department did not provide any further details regarding the number of representatives or the delegation’s composition. The UN General Assembly traditionally brings together representatives of countries from around the world in New York. Heads of state and government, foreign ministers, and other high-ranking officials participate in its sessions.

For Iran, this year’s trip to the U.S. will take place against the backdrop of tense relations with Washington. Despite this, the U.S. side has confirmed that an Iranian delegation may travel to participate in the UN General Assembly, according to Reuters.

According to two unnamed U.S. officials familiar with the situation, Iranian fire has shot down at least two U.S. General Atomics MQ-1 military drones in recent days.
