The United States and Iran have reached a political agreement on the main points of a peace deal, but continue to disagree on the issue of unfreezing Iran’s frozen assets.

According to media reports, Iran and the United States are still exchanging messages regarding the details of a memorandum of understanding amid ongoing tensions, including recent exchanges of airstrikes.

The key issue remains the problem of frozen assets, specifically the amount the U.S. is willing to unfreeze and the timeline for doing so.

The U.S. president is seeking to sign a favorable and reliable agreement, so the American side is taking a tough negotiating stance on financial concessions.

“Iran wants Tehran to have between $6 billion and $12 billion of its frozen funds unfrozen, while Washington seeks to release funds in stages for humanitarian goods and categorically refuses to return funds to Iran,” one of the agency’s Iranian sources noted.

A senior European official also confirmed that negotiations are currently focused specifically on technical details and the amount.

According to sources in Iran, the priority of the Iranian establishment is not a comprehensive resolution of the war, but rather the creation of conditions that would allow the country to regain a minimal degree of maneuverability through the unfreezing of its assets and a ceasefire.

The source added that military operations between the two sides have reached an impasse, but a return to war cannot be ruled out at this time.

This was reported by Reuters, citing Iranian sources.
