The U.S. will allocate more than $5 billion for scientific research involving AI
U.S. federal agencies will allocate more than $5 billion to the Genesis Mission program, designed to accelerate scientific research using artificial intelligence.
According to U.S. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright, 278 projects—selected from more than 5,000 applications—will receive funding under the initiative.
The program has become one of the most notable signs of a shift in the Donald Trump administration’s approach to federal spending on science. The White House aims to direct more funding toward research related to artificial intelligence, as well as to individual scientists, rather than solely to institutions—particularly universities—which have traditionally been the primary recipients of such funding. At the same time, researchers from universities are also among the recipients.
Dario Gil, Assistant Secretary of Energy for Science, stated that the Genesis Mission is intended to bring together scientists, research institutions, and technology partners.
“Through the Genesis Mission, we are bringing together the country’s leading researchers, institutions, and technology partners to create the next generation of scientific opportunities,” Gil said.
The funding covers a variety of fields—from biomedical research and power grid reliability to national security, quantum computing, and microelectronics manufacturing.
The largest single grant is $60 million. These funds will be directed toward a project designed to use artificial intelligence tools to commission nuclear power facilities and reduce operating costs.
Gil also explained the metrics that will be used to evaluate the program’s success. These include progress in quantum computing, the development of powerful open-source and cutting-edge AI models, an increase in the number of early-career researchers, and the construction of state-of-the-art AI supercomputers.
The Genesis Mission was established pursuant to a presidential executive order signed in November. Kratsios stated that this program is part of a broader restructuring of the federal government’s role in scientific research.
The day before, the White House released a report titled “Science: A New Golden Age.” In it, Kratios called for directing more and more government funding toward the use of artificial intelligence and support for individual researchers, rather than just universities.
“The Genesis Mission, in particular, is the result of the reforms proposed in this report,” Kratsios said.
