US announces new strikes on targets in Iran

US military forces are carrying out new strikes on targets in Iran amid renewed hostilities after a month without military activity. PBS NewsHour reports, citing the Associated Press.

US Central Command statement

US Central Command said the new strikes are taking place following recent attempted attacks by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and US service members deployed in the region.

The statement did not specify which targets were being struck or what the results were. The Associated Press noted that the report on the operation is developing.

Previous strikes and Iran’s response

On Sunday, the US military reported a strike on missile launchers on Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz. After that, Iran launched missiles at US facilities in Jordan, but they were intercepted.

The United Arab Emirates also said it intercepted an Iranian drone over its territorial waters. US President Donald Trump acknowledged on Monday that additional strikes may be needed.
