The United States has imposed new sanctions against Cuba's leadership
The United States has announced an expansion of sanctions against Cuba’s political leadership. The restrictions target the country’s current president, his inner circle, and members of the Castro family.
This time, the U.S. Treasury Department’s sanctions have directly targeted the families of the communist regime’s leaders. The list of updated restrictions turned out to be unexpectedly broad.
The following individuals and entities have been added to the blacklist:
- the son and grandson of former President Raúl Castro;
- Cuba’s current president, Miguel Díaz-Canel;
- the wife and stepson of the Cuban leader;
- the Ministry of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Cuba.
Raúl Castro no longer holds any official positions on the island, but he remains a key figure in shaping the country’s political future. Now, financial restrictions have extended to his closest relatives.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned the international community that financial restrictions will affect anyone who attempts to assist sanctioned entities or individuals. Rubio emphasized that the U.S. is targeting the network that supports and finances Cuba’s subversive and radical operations.
“Anyone who provides services to these sanctioned entities risks being sanctioned themselves. Foreign banks and other companies that provide services to these organizations must freeze these activities,” Rubio said.
In addition to the Cuban military, the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples, Amistad de Cuba, and the Committees for the Defense of the Revolution have been targeted by sanctions, reports The Guardian.
