Stoltenberg warned of tensions between the U.S. and Europe within NATO
Former NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg stated that relations between the U.S. and its European allies have become more strained and less predictable than they were even two years ago. According to him, the situation within the Alliance is no longer merely complex, but one that requires constant monitoring.
Tensions are rising in relations between the U.S. and its NATO allies, and this is no longer just a matter of political differences but an issue that, according to experts, is becoming increasingly difficult to contain. This was stated by former NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg in an interview with Bloomberg, commenting on the state of transatlantic unity following his resignation in 2024.
He openly acknowledged that he sees no positive momentum in the development of relations between North America and Europe; on the contrary, in his view, the situation has worsened. “I am no more optimistic now than I was two years ago; if anything, the situation has actually worsened,” Stoltenberg said.
The former Secretary General emphasized that the Alliance’s unity remains critically important, as it is precisely this unity that ensures security stability in Europe and North America; however, he also acknowledged that there are limits to what allies are willing to accept in their relations with the United States. Separately, he drew attention to sensitive political statements concerning individual NATO member states, particularly Denmark, and called any threats against it “unacceptable.”
These statements, related to Greenland and the U.S. position, have caused additional tension within the Alliance and have become yet another factor in discussions about the limits of political influence within NATO.
Stoltenberg emphasized that the Alliance can remain strong only if there is trust among all its members, and that any public conflicts and political statements only complicate an already tense situation. This was reported by Bloomberg.
In June 2025, large-scale NATO BALTOPS exercises took place in the Baltic Sea, involving ships from 17 countries. The Kremlin has already called them a provocation.
As a reminder, Norway and Ukraine recently began joint training for drone operators. The training is taking place in Trøndelag as part of Operation Gungne.
