Students from the Netherlands have built the world's first solar-powered ambulance
Students at Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands have unveiled the world’s first ambulance that runs entirely on solar power and powers all of the medical equipment on board.
The vehicle, called Stella Juva, was developed by Solar Team Eindhoven, a team of 23 students. It is equipped with solar panels on the roof and can travel up to 715 kilometers on paved roads in sunny weather.
The vehicle is equipped with essential medical equipment, including an automated external defibrillator and a mobile X-ray machine.
The developers note that Stella Juva is not intended to transport patients to hospitals. The main goal of the project is to provide medical care directly in remote areas where access to electricity and fuel is limited.
In August, the solar-powered “ambulance” will travel to Kenya, where it will undergo field tests at facilities operated by the humanitarian organization Amref Health Africa.
Every year, the Solar Team Eindhoven university team develops eco-friendly vehicles aimed at solving socially significant problems. Previously, the students participated in the 3,000-kilometer World Solar Challenge in Australia and successfully tested one of their models during a trip through Morocco and the Sahara Desert.
