Pakistani court orders release of 19 PTI activists — Dawn

The Lahore High Court in Pakistan has ordered the release of 19 political figures, officials and activists of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, who were being held at Sahiwal Central Jail. The decision was made by Judge Wahid Khan of the Multan bench of the Lahore High Court.

Detention ruled unlawful

According to Dawn, the detainees were held under provisions on maintaining public order (MPO). The court ruled their detention unlawful. Citing sources, the publication reported that all 19 people were released from Sahiwal Central Jail on Sunday.

The political figures were detained on September 13 by order of the deputy commissioner, the publication reported. Their detention was challenged before the Multan bench of the Lahore High Court. Those released include Aga Qamar Abbas, Shoaib Khan Baloch, Tanveer Hussain, Muhammad Azhar, Javed Iqbal and Mansoor Iftikhar Hashmi.

Separate detentions

Also on Sunday, the Crime Control Department (CCD) detained two former officials of the PTI district chapter in Vehari — Muhammad Nadeem Sargana and Shaban Chauhan — near Adda Ghaziabad. The CCD said that a .30-caliber pistol, which it described as illegal, was seized from Chauhan, while six rounds of ammunition were found in Sargana's pocket. The CCD police station in Sahiwal registered a case following a complaint by Inspector Muhammad Sajjad.
