Przydacz says US base in Poland has political approval — RMF24

In Poland, Marcin Przydacz, head of the International Policy Bureau under the president, said that the White House had politically approved the establishment of a permanent US Armed Forces base in the country. According to him, the decision still needs to be implemented by the Pentagon, Poland’s Ministry of National Defence and the Polish military. RMF24 reports.

Meetings in the United States

Przydacz made the statement after meetings at the White House and the US State Department, where the issue of the base was discussed, among other matters. He also said that US President Donald Trump wrote directly about this on September 17.

The Polish official stressed that it would be possible to speak definitively about the establishment of the base after its opening. According to him, there is currently a political decision that needs to be implemented.

Poland seeks for the presence of US military personnel on its territory to cease being predominantly rotational and become permanent. Warsaw has begun a formal process aimed at establishing a permanent US Armed Forces base in the country.

Further consultations

In September, a Pentagon delegation led by William Cappelletti arrived in Poland. The US side tasked him with conducting negotiations on strengthening the presence of US troops in Poland. Representatives of the US European Command also took part in the consultations.

The sides agreed on a schedule for further consultations, meetings in Poland and the United States, as well as the establishment of working groups to develop the details. At the same time, there are still no answers to questions about the base’s location, the number of US military personnel and Poland’s possible infrastructure costs.

Among Warsaw’s arguments in the negotiations, RMF24 names Poland’s high defence spending, purchases of US weapons, existing infrastructure for US troops and the country’s strategic location on NATO’s eastern flank.
