US and partners to step up efforts against technology transfers to and from Iran — Jerusalem Post

The United States and countries participating in the Proliferation Security Initiative (PSI) said on Friday that they intend to step up efforts against transfers of weapons, materials, equipment and technology to and from Iran. This concerns means that could contribute to the development of weapons of mass destruction and their delivery systems, including drones. The Jerusalem Post reports.

Intelligence sharing and preventing transfers

The countries issued a joint statement to mark the anniversary of the reinstatement of six UN Security Council resolutions imposing restrictions on Iran under the snapback mechanism.

PSI participants plan to intensify intelligence sharing, streamline information-transfer procedures and strengthen measures to intercept and prevent Iranian activities related to the proliferation of technology.

The statement also backed the US sanctions campaign Operation Economic Outcast and called on all UN member states to implement the reinstated resolutions. Iran was urged to return to fulfilling its non-proliferation obligations and to fully cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency.

Trump's statements on Iran

The enhanced cooperation came after statements by US President Donald Trump, who said this week that certain events would soon take place in Iran. He also claimed that Tehran's military and economic capabilities had been significantly undermined over six months of war.

Trump said that the United States almost completely controls the Strait of Hormuz, although, according to him, mines are placed there from time to time, disrupting traffic. He also claimed that the largest volume of oil in history had passed through the strait over the previous three days.
