Sudan rejects US remarks on government legitimacy — TimesLIVE
Sudan said it is defending its national sovereignty and called on Washington to engage positively with the country’s government. Sudan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation responded this way to a statement by US State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott. This was reported by TimesLIVE.
Sudan’s reaction
Pigott stated that neither the Sudanese Armed Forces, nor the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, nor their respective leaders represent Sudan’s legitimate constitutional governance.
Sudan’s Foreign Ministry firmly rejected the statement. It stressed that any peace initiative, to be successful and lasting, must be based on respect for the country’s sovereignty, unity, territorial integrity and legitimate national institutions.
The ministry also said that peace efforts must address the root causes of the continuing war, including negative external interference.

Visa for Burhan and negotiations
According to sources, the United States refrained from issuing a visa to Sudanese army commander Abdel Fattah al-Burhan ahead of his planned trip to New York for the annual UN gathering of world leaders. According to the information, his participation was linked to agreeing to a 90-day ceasefire.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that mediation efforts to end the war in Sudan are frustrating. According to him, the parties agreed to arrangements and signed them, but the commitments were not fulfilled. He also pointed to the presence of external actors in the conflict.
The war in Sudan began in April 2023 after a power struggle between the military and the Rapid Support Forces. It has displaced more than 14 million people and caused one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises. The UN fact-finding mission reported this month that foreign weapons, military technology, fighters and logistical networks support the conflict and expand the parties’ ability to carry out drone strikes on remote civilian areas.
