Tim Scott defended Darline Graham's national security knowledge
Republican Senator from South Carolina Tim Scott said that his colleague Darline Graham has knowledge of national security issues. The statement came ahead of the second round of the state's Republican primaries, The Guardian World reports.
Graham's response at the debate
Graham is competing in the primary runoff against South Carolina Congressman Ralph Norman. During their debate, she struggled to answer questions about US national security interests regarding Taiwan and the South China Sea.
She acknowledged that she was not sufficiently informed in the area of national security and said that it was not her field. Graham was appointed to the Senate seat previously held by her brother, Lindsey Graham, after his sudden death in July.
Before her appointment, Graham worked in various public policy positions in South Carolina. At the same time, she had not previously run for office or held public office.

Scott's and Trump's position
In an interview with NBC's Meet the Press, Scott was asked whether a US senator should understand national security issues. He answered affirmatively and said that Graham has such knowledge, but did not provide specific details about her experience in this field.
Scott also said that the key question is whether Graham is ready to represent South Carolina residents in the US Senate and work on current issues.
US President Donald Trump also supported Graham and arrived in South Carolina on Friday for an event in her support. He called her response during the debate honest.
