Tom Hanks will reprise his role in a baseball movie 35 years later
Sony Pictures has announced the release date for its new film, *The Return*, starring Tom Hanks. The baseball-themed film will hit theaters on July 30, 2027—35 years after the release of “A League of Their Own.”
The film is directed by Mariel Geller, who previously worked with Hanks on “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.” She also wrote the screenplay. It is based on the short story of the same name by author Dave Eggers, published in 2024.
Tom Hanks will play a pitching coach whose life changes dramatically after he is hit by a baseball during practice.
This isn’t Tom Hanks’s first baseball movie. In 1992, he played one of the leading roles in the film *A League of Their Own*, where his co-stars included Geena Davis, Madonna, Lori Petty, and Rosie O’Donnell.
In the film, Hanks portrayed manager Jimmy Duggan in a story about the U.S. women’s professional baseball league of the 1940s. It was there that he delivered his famous line, “No crying in baseball,” which later ranked 54th on the American Film Institute’s list of the greatest movie quotes.
