Trump wants to make changes to the memorandum agreed upon with Iran — Axios

U.S. President Donald Trump has put forward new demands regarding the revision of the Iran deal, which had previously been agreed upon by American negotiators.

This was reported by Axios, citing a senior Trump administration official.

During a meeting in the Situation Room, the U.S. leader initiated significant amendments to the text of the document, which kicked off another round of negotiations between the countries.

According to sources, the U.S. president is interested in signing this agreement and hopes to conclude it in the near future.

However, it is critically important for him to strengthen several provisions regarding restrictions on Tehran’s nuclear program.

In particular, Trump instructed his team to change the wording governing the monitoring of the Islamic Republic’s nuclear facilities.

“There will be a deal. As for the timing—we’ll see. We’re prepared to wait so the president gets what he wants. It could be a week. It could be less. It could be more. By the end of the week, we hope to have something,” a senior White House official stated.

Official representatives of the administration emphasize the government’s uncompromising stance on protecting national interests.

A White House spokesperson confirmed to reporters that Trump “will only sign a deal that is beneficial to America, meets his ‘red lines,’ and ensures that Iran will never be able to possess nuclear weapons.”

For their part, Iranian officials told state media that Tehran has not yet approved the final version of the document either.

Although U.S. representatives had previously claimed that the Iranian side was fully prepared to sign the memorandum, and the final decision rested solely with Washington.

The current draft of the memorandum of understanding contains a general commitment by Iran not to seek to develop nuclear weapons, but lacks other specific concessions.

The document provides for a 60-day period for detailed negotiations on nuclear restrictions and the potential lifting of U.S. sanctions.

The primary topics for discussion are expected to be methods for disposing of existing stocks of enriched uranium and setting limits on its future production.
