Trump calls talk of Hegseth’s 2028 campaign premature

US President Donald Trump said it is still too early to discuss a possible 2028 presidential campaign by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. Responding to reporters in the Oval Office about an NBC News report, Trump said Hegseth is doing a fantastic job, but that it is premature to talk about it for now.

Midterm elections

Trump also said that the midterm elections must come first. The Republican Party, which he represents, will fight to retain control of both chambers of the US Congress in the November elections.

As Daily Maverick reports, citing Reuters, NBC News previously wrote that the Pentagon chief had discussed the possibility of running for the White House. Last week, Hegseth called the report “100% false” in a social media post.

Possible candidates

Hegseth is a US Army National Guard veteran and a former Fox News Channel television host. This month, he campaigned for Republicans at the Iowa State Fair, which draws significant political attention.

Trump is limited to two presidential terms and has not yet named a successor to his Make America Great Again movement after his term ends in 2029. Supporters of Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio have also urged them to take part in the presidential race. According to Trump, there may be more potential candidates than are publicly known.
