Trump threatened to halt arms supplies to Ukraine over Europe's stance on Iran – FT

U.S. President Donald Trump issued an ultimatum to European allies, threatening to halt arms transfers to Ukraine under the PURL program unless NATO joins the operation in the Strait of Hormuz.

According to the Financial Times, the American leader demanded that partners help unblock the strategic sea route, which Tehran had previously blocked. After an initial refusal by European capitals, Washington applied pressure related to military support for Kyiv, which is funded by Alliance countries.

Faced with the threat of a halt to arms deliveries and through the mediation of NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, key members of the bloc changed their rhetoric. On March 19, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom issued a joint statement expressing their readiness to ensure safe passage through the strait. According to sources, Rutte described Trump’s demeanor during the negotiations as “quite hysterical” as he tried to convince European leaders of the White House’s seriousness regarding the withdrawal of support for Ukraine.

British officials confirmed the pressure from Washington, noting that threats to cut off military aid were a real tool of influence during the discussions. NATO representatives are currently refraining from official comments regarding the content of Rutte’s private conversations with Trump and Marco Rubio.

Meanwhile, U.S. Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker has already stated that Trump has begun reviewing policy regarding support for European initiatives aimed at assisting Ukraine, direct U.S. participation in NATO, and other international commitments.

Earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he is seriously considering the possibility of the United States withdrawing from NATO. According to him, this is due to the fact that the Alliance did not join the U.S. operation against Iran.

The United Kingdom has responded to U.S. President Donald Trump’s statement regarding the country’s possible withdrawal from NATO. Prime Minister Keir Starmer emphasized his commitment to the Alliance and assured that he would not allow the country to be drawn into war.
