Trump to hold talks with Takaichi in New York — South China Morning Post
US President Donald Trump will hold talks with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi in New York on Tuesday on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. The meeting will take place two days before Trump’s talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Washington, South China Morning Post reports.
Xi Jinping’s visit to the United States
Beijing confirmed on Monday that Xi Jinping will make a three-day state visit to Washington from Wednesday through Friday. His meeting with Trump on Thursday will be the leaders’ third in-person meeting since the US president returned to office last year.
This will be the first state visit by the Chinese president to the United States in more than 10 years. Before Trump and Xi met in South Korea in October last year, the US president visited Tokyo for direct talks with Takaichi. In March, the Japanese prime minister held a bilateral meeting with Trump at the White House.

Taiwan and rare earth metals
Experts believe that the timing of Trump’s talks with Takaichi indicates Tokyo’s desire to prevent Washington from making concessions at the expense of Japan’s regional security and economic interests. The meeting is expected to address China’s export restrictions on rare earth metals and Taiwan.
Beijing considers Taiwan part of China and says reunification by force is possible. Most countries, including the United States, do not recognize Taiwan as an independent state. At the same time, Washington opposes any attempt to take the self-governed island by force and is committed to supplying it with weapons.
