Trump announced a three-day pause on the 50 percent tariffs against Canada

U.S. President Donald Trump announced Tuesday evening that he had temporarily suspended the 50 percent tariffs on Canadian imports after the U.S. and Canada reached a trade agreement. According to him, the suspension will last three days.

The tariffs, which Trump announced in July, were set to take effect on Wednesday. In a post on Truth Social, he said the parties had reached an agreement, but the documents for its finalization still needed to be completed.

Trump also stated that the agreement could help revive the Keystone XL oil pipeline project. It was intended to transport oil from Canada to the U.S., but plans for the pipeline were scrapped during Joe Biden’s presidency.

The agreement was preceded by intense negotiations between Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who was trying to avoid the imposition of tariffs. Despite the temporary suspension of tariffs, Carney warned that the parties still have work to do, according to Deutsche Welle.
