Trump proposes renaming New Mexico state to ‘New America’
US President Donald Trump has proposed renaming the state of New Mexico to “New America.” He published the corresponding post on social media, Euronews reports.
Trump said that allegedly “many people” had suggested changing the state’s name. In his view, the name “New America” would be “more prestigious and beautiful” for the state’s residents.
Governor’s reaction
New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham rejected the proposal. In a comment to Fox News, she said that the state’s name is not open for discussion and has belonged to it since before the United States existed.

She also said that the president is seeking to distract Americans from problems, including rising gasoline prices.
Other naming proposals
The White House shared an image in which the Mexico part of the state’s name was crossed out and replaced with America. Several similar images were also published on Trump’s Truth Social account. Some US media outlets reported that the renaming idea originated as an internet hoax.
Several days earlier, Trump signed an order to rename Lake Ontario “Lake America” amid a trade dispute with Canada. Canada rejected the attempt. Last week, the president also proposed calling the Strait of Hormuz the “Trump Strait,” but several hours later indicated that he was not serious about the plan. In 2025, he renamed the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America,” a move not recognized by Mexico.
